Happy 40 Ounce Day!

Do you linger on my every word like a lovesick schoolgirl? Or would you like to take a rusty ice pick to my jugular to make me shut the hell up? For, or against? Point, counterpoint? Discuss.

What began as National 40 Day, one man's dream to celebrate the lost art of drinking a 40oz. bottle of liquor out of a brown paper bag in a public place, is now an internationally celebrated event, respected by at least three people over at least two continents!

While those of you who know me know that I spit in the face of the mass produced holidays that give our nations another excuse to close down for the day and give our economy another small kick in the nutsack just so they can stay home and watch TV and drink beer, I am, however, dedicated to perpetrating a few select celebrational days that show my pride for the finer things in life. So, whilst dead pine trees and egg-shaped chocolate treats hold no favor with me, the opportunity to celebrate the fine art of drinking a big bottle of booze out of a brown paper bag in a public place and getting away with it is of much merit. And thus, as of 2006, National 40 Day officially became International 40 Ounce Day.

So, come February 9th - the 40th day of the year - myself and my buddy I often speak of here (whom, though the apellation "my buddy" would continue to suffice since I only have one, I will now begin referring to as "FiFo", because the more I mention him here, the weirder I feel about never referring to him by any kind of name!), set out to celebrate this glorious event.

On our quest, however, we were beset by several challenges right from the get-go.

The first and foremost was that, being located in Australia where our beverages are sold by the liter or milliliter, not the ounce, we had to work out exactly what the local equivalent of 40oz. of liquor would be. With the help of OnlineConversion.com, I quickly ascertained that 40oz. is approximately 1.18 liters of liquor, metrically speaking.

Now, since in this country, booze is sold in 375ml (~12oz.) "stubbies", cans, or hip flasks, 700ml (~24oz.) bottles for almost all basic spirits, 750ml (~25oz.) "longnecks", or by the even liter (~34oz.) for the real alcohol enthusiast, finding beverages in 1.18 liter bottles was not an easy task. Smirnoff Vodka, Jim Beam Bourbon, and Coyote Tequila were the only drinks that were available in 40oz. bottles at all, and these were priced between AUD$65-$85 (~USD$48-$63) a bottle, which, since you lazy fuckers don't click enough ad links around here, was a little out of our price range! =P

The next obstacle, for me at least, was that as I've mentioned, I can no longer get drunk due to medical problems, and hence formally "quit drinking" last New Year, being that drinking but not getting drunk is a pointless waste of money. So although I had a purpose to drink today besides inebriation, there was still the risk that if I really drank in the style I'm accustomed to, I'd seriously fucking regret it. So I had to nancy it up for the sake of the occasion, and resort to drinking cider, since it's about the only thing I can drink much of nowadays without the guts playing up.

We decided to just settle on buying two 700ml bottles each, and the resulting 48oz. of booze each would have to suffice, even though we couldn't *actually* drink from a 40oz. bottle. So, I bought two 700ml bottles of StrongBow Sweet Cider, and FiFo bought one 700ml bottle of Jim Beam & Cola, and, thankfully for our manhood and dignity, a 700ml bottle of good old Bundaberg Rum. If at least one of us wasn't drinking cheap rum on 40 Ounce Day, it just wouldn't have been right....

And so, armed with our liquor and a pack of cheap brown paper bags, we set out to our destination.

(In the process of all the above, we did a shitload of pointless driving around from store to store. I took some pointless footage of us driving around randomly - and annoying pedestrians by videotaping them crossing the road >=P - but this is a 40MB AVI file which is essentially just roadside scenery with Van Halen playing, so don't download it unless you're REALLY fucking bored... oh, not to mention that another hitch in our plans showed up when the batteries in my camera decided to die while I was shooting that clip, almost preventing the existence of all the other photos you see here, but luckily FiFo is an expert at stealing batteries and we were headed to buy the paper bags anyway... >=P)

Anyways, I had the perfect destination in mind - a children's playground, of course - and when I saw the No Drinking sign, I knew we'd found the perfect spot. I mean, it's illegal to drink anywhere in public here, but in specifically signed areas... man, look at the size of that fine!!

So, we had our location, we had our ready-made booze-in-a-bag, we had a Big Mac - oh, wait, my bad, that's just a fake stock photo McD's uses on their menus, here's the REAL Big Mac we got - we were good to go.

Funnily, we were obviously far from the first people to risk the fine and drink at this park - there was plenty of evidence of prior similar acts all over the place...

So, yeah... we drank... and... uh... drank some more... FiFo discovered an excellent hiding place for a pedophile...

And then, in typical fashion for around here, just as we were finishing our first rounds, the skies opened up as God decided to piss all over our meagre attempt at celebration and camraderie. So, making sure we left our own contributing to the scenery to commemorate the occasion, we did the only thing two manly drinking men could do in our situation - we ran back to the van and fled for a safe dry destination, ie. my place. For us, International 40 Ounce Day was prematurely terminated.

But fuck, hey... in the face of bad weather, the outrageous potential fines, my medical issues with booze, the fact that neither of us could really financially justify buying liquor at the moment, and, of course, the total and utter lack of 40oz. bottled liquor in this country, I think we made a pretty damn good effort, don't you? =D

I didn't even know that the International holiday was just the other day. I am what you would call a "social drinker" I applaud your effort to celebrate the holiday by risking jailtime etc.

In reference to the Big Mac maybe you should send a letter to the HQ of McD's and show them your Big Mac versus the advertised version. I doubt they will do too much, but it could be an interesting story for us to hear.

How many alcoholic beverages should I make (because I hate some beer and the wussy shit ain't worth my time)? I want to make up for the lost holiday so to speak.

Hmm...I can't celebrate...as I don't drink...

Will a can of Doctor Pepper, or a bottle of Coca Cola Classic do?

40 oz worth of booze

or you can do "2000 proof" (consume shit and add up the proofs till you hit 2000 [3 shots @ 150 proof > 3*150=450 etc])

Uhh, gee, I dunno, say, 40 OUNCES?!? =P

Bunch of dumbasses. Ambrosia asked me how much wine she'd have to drink to make up 40oz. I gave her the same answer. =P

No, you pussy fuck. I don't drink either - in fact, me drinking now has a risk of causing serious medical problems - but I still celebrated! Now stop being a whiner, get out there and get a bottle of rum and get drunk already!!

Damn, kids these days...

Is it just me, or does your dick-and-fart-joke sense of humor actually get lamer by the day? Or is it just that you get so giggly when you see rude words that you're overcome with a powerful compulsion to try and be funny, but in an effort to not reuse the same pun twice, you've long since run out of anything even remotely amusing and have to settle for elementary school lame?

I bet you're the kind of person who laughs every time you hear the word "dingleberry".

No son, you're a Board Spamming Assclown - there's a big difference! =P

Besides, you don't need to resort to posting irrelevant one word posts in answer to questions that were never asked to keep that postcount up, do you? =)
