Shine On You Crazy Diamond

I just realised, this site was offline for a touch over three years. That's a long time between updates even by my standards. Let's not dwell on that point, okay? I'm just going to pick up my bullshit ramblings here like I never left off. =)
Last night, I had the pleasure of seeing, live in concert, one Mr. Neil Leslie Diamond. And I really don't care what anybody might say, that is one dude who knows how to fucking rock.
And no, I'm not being snide. I mean it - you kids these days can take your rappers and your gangstas and your pop bimbos and your watered down flavors of politically correct modern alternative rock and you can jam them in your cornhole. Neil Diamond is the real shit - I mean come on, how many other artists or bands from his era are still rocking? Almost none! They're all dead, or disbanded, or they've just lost it, like poor old Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. But the Neil is still shakin' his sequined thing after five fuckin' decades on the stage!
Now me, I've always thought The Neil was a bit of a dude, but I pretty much expected his concert to be wall-to-wall creepy desperate old divorcées all clamoring to throw their XXL granny panties at the Great Man. But I tell you, The Neil caters to people of all genders, ages, and walks of life - his audience was made up of everything from hot little teenyboppers squealing like it was an American Idol audition, to old coots old enough to be my grandmother's parents. From 30-something couples in suits and dresses, to disoriented bachelors in jeans and t-shirts. And I thought to myself, "This is a man that has made his mark on the world!"...
Okay, so there were a few of his sleepier love songs in there that made some couples snuggle a little closer, while my buddies and I went out for a few smokes and some beers, but for the most part, Neil kept the crowd pumping with classic hit after classic hit. And I've really gotta hand it to the guy - he's 64 years old this year, but he got up on that stage and rocked non-stop, with no front band and no intermission, for the better part of three hours, and did not die. Me, I'm less than half his age and I can't even stand up for thirty minutes without shifting my weight and scoping out a place to take a load off my aching legs!
So I just wanted to say, as I reopen my site to the world after a three year absence with a very unstereotypically pleasant article (probably going to attract a completely weird demographic of users here until I get my second article online, so I'd better do that fast so that people realise this is actually the site of a ranting cynical bastard!), that my hat goes off to you, Mr. Diamond - in a world where new artists are manufactured by choosing some mindless drone off the street in televised game show style popularity contests and given their brief glimmer of fame until the next season's winner takes the headline, you remind us what it's like for real talent to truly burn brightly for a lifetime - so Shine On, You Crazy Diamond...

The Neil Diamond Mystery and various other ponderings.
Ok, this post is really not worth all of the suspense that I put you through til this point but here it is anyway.
I used to really like Neil Diamond. I agree with you the man is incredibly talented. Awesome voice.
When my co-workers want to give me a hard time they will all in unison start singing "coming to america".
Here's why.
When I was a child I would spend the summers with my grandparents. I have an aunt that is just a few years older than I am and we would have to share a room during the summer. She kept the radio on at night while we slept. Then, as I still do now, I had a tendency to dream of any song that was playing on the radio. Most nights at my grandparents I did not sleep well. One summer in particular she was hung up on Neil Diamond and played the single "Coming to America" over and over and over and over. She would put it on at night and when it would go off she would get up and put it back on. Finally, she would go to sleep, so then I could go to sleep. But at sometime in the middle of the night she would wake up and put the record back on and we would do this all over again another 5 to 10 times. By the end of the summer I hated that song and everytime I hear of Neil Diamond today that is what I think of! My aunt and I despised each other back then and that was a really bad summer for me because she picked on me and made fun of me all summer. That is what neil diamond reminds me of and I hate that because he really is a talented guy. Dont get me wrong. It's not him I dislike!
I was right, wasn't I? Not hardly worth all the suspense. But when I came on this forum the first time I thought it was funny because I read that and immediatly thought of the worst summer of my childhood. My aunt has it worse though.....she has physical scars still yet today! We don't despise each other now. We just don't speak very often. She does like to show me the scars on her arm every so often though.
I messed up and told my co-workers this though and now when they are trying to irritate they cook it up and when I walk by they break into song. They are all big Neil Fans too.
What other music do you like? I'm versatile, but classic rock is my favorite, I really couldn't even tell you much about music today, I mostly listen to my C.D.s and my brother calls me a geek. He's starts talking about all these popular people now and I have no clue who he's talking about. He's trying to break into the music business himself. He and his freinds have a band, and I've never really paid much attention to them until recently. Apparently somebody likes them. They just got a sponser to pay for their studio time and copyrite their songs. He thinks they are good and have a shot at it. He played a song for me today that knocked my socks off. I couldn't believe it. They just won a battle of the bands and got a hot spot for it at a club in the next town over. That's his whole life and I'm so afraid he's going to end up dissapointed. This is the same kid that thinks Aerosmith are a bunch of geeks. Aerosmith is one of my favorites!
See what happens when you let me go off topic! I don't know when to quit! I'm going to go sim now.

Always Dancing in the Shadows.
{laughs} Had that been me, I'd be in jail right now for decapitating my cousin with a length of piano wire.... =P
Coming To America always just reminds me of the old Neil Diamond SNL sketch with Will Ferrel and John Goodman... "Few people know that I'm fueled creatively by my massive hatred of immigrants. ... Well my love of this great and beautiful nation, and my hatred of all people with dark skin, led me to write this. On the boats, and on the planes! They're coming to America! Never looking back again! Just do the best you can."
Heh, cracks me up every time.
Don't even get me started on kids and their music these days... that's a whole seperate rant that makes my Reality TV rant look like a Christmas carol!
My ex-girlfriend used to sleep with a huge fan on, even in the dead of winter. It seemed a little crazy to me at the time... but now I do it. {shrugs} That playing of one single over and over and over though, man... anybody tries that shit near me, they get that vinyl inserted somewhere VERY uncomfortable... =P

That one drives me nuts as well. It has taken me a very long time to actualy be able to listen to any of Alanis Morrisette's Jaggard Little Pill album. It was the very first cd my sister owned so of course that was all I heared night and day for months!Venomous wrote:That playing of one single over and over and over though, man... anybody tries that shit near me, they get that vinyl inserted somewhere VERY uncomfortable... =P
Your brother owns an Avril Lavigne album? Would your brother happen to be, perchance, a homosexual? =)Renae the Boozehound wrote:When my brother first got Avril 'shitegeist' Lavigne's album, that's what I woke up to every single morning. I don't even think that bothered me as much as the fact that I now unwittingly and subconsciously know all the words to most of her craptacular songs! Argh! ARGH!
I mean, I'd certainly like my dick to be inside Avril Lavigne, but that certainly doesn't mean I'd pay money to listen to her music! =P

I love most types of music - and I'd like to think that I have a good taste in music. I love most Rock, Hard Rock, Metal (and most forms of Metal), some Alt-country (Wilco).
