LARP and us!

Completely off-topic conversational diarrhea that the rest of the internet won't let you post anywhere because it's so pointless and irrelevant to anything important.

LARP and us!

Post by Supernovae » Thu Feb 16, 2006 9:11 am

In a conversation in the chat room Venomous, AlarmedBread, Hellmark, Hero_of_the_Day and I got into a brief conversation about LARP, which is, Live Action Role-Playing. LARP is something in which a group of people dress to a character and act out that character in the woods. The weapons range, based on the character, from sticks to mauls and even rocks.

Thankyou to Venomous for providing this video Live Action Role-Playing

This video clip shows a sample of what LARP members do as a weekend activity. If you wish to learn more about LARP then I suggest trying Google or if you are CJJ then go here first.

I want to make a few quick observations about this video because this is the first time anything like this has been brought to my attention. It certainly isn't my cup of tea, but I will not bash it just because I don't approve or understand it completely.

I was shocked to see a healthy mixture of males and females in the crowd as it was nice to see some female interest in the activity. I was also shocked to find that the age range for most of the participants ranges quite a bit from mid-teens to late 30s. Hellmark brought it to our attention that the 30 year old participant who was throwing "Lightning Bolts" didn't know the rules for an RPG character. Apparently he wasn't thinking of a "mana pool" since you are NOT able to have an unlimited supply of "mana" to cast "magic spells".

It must be hard to participate in a LARP activity and become the first one killed because you must remain on the spot of "death" until the game is over. If I ever participated in a LARP game then I would either be the first one killed (as some asshole would want me to suffer again after being stepped on) or I would be the one "casting" "death spells" to anyone in the 1/2 mile proximity of me. But I dont think that would be fun for other people.

Ohh well, I digress.

Any other thoughts?

ok the 30 year old guys aim sucked big time (when he actually threw the pebbles; half the time he was just saying shit)

the ogres went down way to easily and not enough of the other team went down

second this "game "could use a few things to make it more interesting

maybe bigger rocks (say golf ball size) for the lightning bolts?

How could you tell who was on each team?? It looked like a free-for-all to me..

If they used telsa coils then I think I would actually race to the woods and watch the battles.
